House Kohler

The location and views of this house with an in-law-suite are more than unique. The house is located at the top of a steep slope, right on the edge of the forest and is visible even from Bregenz. Since the terrain was to remain as untouched as possible, the slope presented interesting challenges. The result is a 4-story, tower-like cube that does not dig into the terrain, but leans against the slope. The floors are extensively glazed on all sides and the closed wall surfaces are reduced to a minimum in order to keep the breathtaking, unrestricted view over the entire Lake of Constance, the Rhine Valley and the Alps.

It seems as if the landscape is growing into the building. The proximity to nature is the reasoning for a shingled wood facade.
